Colors & Textures of Rabat Morocco

We arrived in Casablanca and immediately went to Rabat. We are staying in the Medina (old city) of Rabat. The streets (pedestrians and motorcycles) are all cobblestone and the walls are mostly white and very tall - 2/3 stories. We haven’t entirely gotten lost yet but our maps have been a bit confused.

There are a few distinguishing landmarks such as the decoration around this door.

Another elaborate door.

We have passed a couple of places that appeared to be workshops for doing this type of woodwork.

Murals are helpful landmarks too; this burro is across from the door of our riad.

Beautiful wooden doors are common.

Elaborate tile is less common in the medina.

“Alleys” off of the market streets are sometimes brightly painted.

Not certain if it is to attract the eye of potential shoppers and/or to make the space more welcoming.

This theater is outside the medina.

After white, blue is the next most common color.

We haven’t seen purple bougainvillea but plenty of red, coral, and white.

This blue is decidedly less well maintained.

Arabesque is a prominent decoration.

Juxtaposition of crumbling old walls and the crisp lines of Hassan tower.
