Blue Cave of Bisevo

  One of the Croatian island  cruise selection criteria was a visit to the Blue Cave on Bisevo.  Doesn’t look particularly impressive from the outside does it?  Nothing else besides the Blue Cave on this tiny island but lots of people come to see it. There are three entrances to the cave.  A dry entrance - how the cave was originally “found”. A wet entrance - dynamited for boat tourism  And an underwater entrance - why the Blue Cave is blue. This is the wet entrance and it was intentionally kept small to minimize light bleed into the cave.  We did have to duck our heads. View of the wet entrance from inside. The underwater entrance is very close to the surface of the water and the sandy bottom here is highly reflective.  The sunlight outside penetrates the water, bounces off the sand and reflects back up through the water into the cave.  It is brilliantly blue and thankfully the photos show it. Life on the Water in Venice

  It’s easy to refer to Venice as an island but in reality it is 118 islands connected by 400+ bridges according to Wikipedia. (We did not count.) It is somewhat shaped like a fish with the access bridge at the “mouth”. The bridge supports both the train and a highway but both end when they reach the island.  Cars go to the large manufactured square parking areas in the top left of the image below. From that point all transit is on foot or by boat.  Because all the bridges have stairs, even using a bicycle is not practical. Venice is about ½ mile wide at the narrow part of the fish tail and less than 4 miles long.  The hospital is the pinkish area of the map on the right side. This is the grand canal which curves through the center of Venice. The long boat on the far left that sort of looks like a train car is the equivalent of a public “bus”.  They are called vaporetto and they traverse the Grand Canal or around the island or to/from  Venice to neighboring...

Croatia - Istrian Peninsula

  Met up in Zagreb with Santa Cruz expats and headed for the Istrian peninsula. Our first stop was in Rovinj (pronounced Roveen).  We stayed in the pedestrian old town. Lots of restaurants, bars, shops, and nightlife. Also, just a few boats. And yachts of varying sizes. This is one of the smallest ones.  There were not a lot of yachts - 1 giant one, a couple of large, a few medium, and fewer than 10 of this size. View of Rovinj and anti-facism monument.  Croatia has a long history of fascism, resistance, and wars related to fascism.  Both Rovinj and Groznjan had memorials dedicated to anti-fascism.  June 22 in Croatia is a National Holiday dedicated to anti-fascism. And yet, the internet will tell you that in the 1990s when Croatia was most recently in a period of upheaval, thousands of anti-fascism monuments were removed.
